The Story So Far
Welcome to Alternate Road, where we are mad about good times and great experiences. It’s great to have you on board!
It’s always been this way. I grew up in Bendigo surrounded by bush land. As a kid, we always went on great holidays in and around Victoria. Camping in the lush green hills of South Gippsland. Day trips to the explore the mystique of Mt Macedon. Brief getaways to the waters of nearby lakes and reservoirs. Our love of beautiful scenery was revealed through the lens of a car window.
When I was 16, I spent a year in Denmark as an exchange student. It was the best and worst year of my life. I was homesick, yet fuelled by the excitement of life within another culture, language, and lifestyle. That time honed my understanding of what it means to travel and the value of life experience.
More than 23 years on (goodness me!), I’ve lived and worked mostly in Melbourne, with a couple of years in the UK. Still, I’ve continued to travel at every opportunity, enjoying times both near and far.
Finding great people, great places and great produce makes me tick. I’m a people person, but also an enthusiastic collector of life experiences. I love to hear stories and to explore buildings and spaces of extraordinary design and architecture. I live for that moment when the beauty of a natural wonder suddenly takes your breath away. Put all that in a package along with some great food, great wine, great beer (or great gin), I’ll be the first in line!
Alternate Road is the incarnation of those passions.
In 2016, I set about mapping a series of experiences worth sharing. It evolved into something pretty unique: day tours unlike any others, especially geared for likeminded explorers.
We are all about combining great people, great places and great produce in areas off the major tourist track. You’re invited. Come with me.
WHAT’S ALTERNATE ROAD ALL ABOUT?
At Alternate Road, we know another way. We discover great people, great places and great produce around Melbourne, Victoria, and beyond. We focus on areas off the major tourist track.
There are so many sights, sounds and smells that are worth discovering, exploring and sharing. Some of them are from boutique, family-run wineries in the picturesque Macedon ranges to an extraordinary Buddhist Stupa—a work-in-progress in the forest outside Bendigo. Alternate Road will take you on a memorable adventure where you will share experiences with like-minded folk and fall in love with regional Victoria.
We prefer small producers and artisans using quality raw or natural materials. Delicacies like sheep’s milk cheese or wood fired pottery. If you like that too, but have trouble finding the good stuff, you’ll be completely surprised by what’s on offer just around the corner. Alternate Road knows.
Our day tours are unique. We’ve done the ground work, so you can simply click and the adventure is yours. Do you want to see a bit further into the lives of locals? Do you fancy finding a new favourite place to tell your friends about? Join the Alternate Road tribe.
If you like to get a bit more hands-on with the planning, let’s work together to tailor a tour to suit your mindset. An Alternate Road that’s truly unique and truly yours.
